Spectre Divide and studio behind it shut down

By MichaelMar 18,2025

Spectre Divide, a game that generated buzz thanks to the involvement of renowned streamer and former esports pro Shroud, is shutting down. Mountaintop Studios, the developer, announced its closure this week, with the game's servers slated to go offline in approximately one month. Players will receive refunds for in-game purchases during this period. The game ultimately failed to garner a sufficiently large player base or generate enough revenue to remain viable.

While the failure of Spectre Divide is disappointing, it underscores the significant challenges inherent in the competitive live-service game market. The game lacked the innovative features necessary to attract a wide player base. Even Shroud's considerable influence proved insufficient to overcome this fundamental hurdle. The differing priorities between professional players and casual gamers represent a significant obstacle for many game developers.

The closure of Spectre Divide serves as a reminder of the high risk involved in esports-driven game development.
