Following reports of potential shifts in its business model, Palworld developer Pocketpair has definitively stated that the game will remain a buy-to-play title, dismissing speculation of a free-to-play (F2P) or Games-as-a-Service (GaaS) transition.
Palworld Remains Buy-to-Play: No F2P or GaaS
In a recent Twitter (X) announcement, the Palworld team confirmed their commitment to the existing buy-to-play model. This clarification follows an interview where Pocketpair explored various future possibilities, including a potential shift to a live service and F2P model. However, the developer clarified that these discussions were preliminary and ultimately concluded that a F2P/GaaS approach isn't suitable for Palworld. They emphasized that the game's core design doesn't align with a F2P model, and adapting it would be excessively challenging. Moreover, they acknowledged player preference, prioritizing the community's wishes.
Future Development: DLC and Skins Under Consideration
While maintaining the buy-to-play model, Pocketpair confirmed ongoing internal discussions regarding future development. They are exploring the possibility of releasing downloadable content (DLC) and cosmetic skins to support ongoing development and content updates. However, details on these plans will be shared at a later date. The developer reiterated their commitment to delivering the best possible Palworld experience and apologized for any concerns caused by the previous reports.
Previous Interview Clarified, PS5 Version Rumored
The developer clarified that an earlier interview with ASCII Japan, which sparked the F2P speculation, was conducted several months prior. In that interview, the CEO, Takuro Mizobe, expressed intentions to add new content, including Pals and raid bosses. Separately, a potential PS5 version of Palworld was listed in a preliminary announcement for the Tokyo Game Show 2024 (TGS 2024), though this remains unconfirmed.
