Phantom Blade Zero Development Updates
Phantom Blade Zero Not A Soulslike, Features Four Difficulty Options
Recent reports confirm that Phantom Blade Zero will include four difficulty settings: Easy, Ordinary, Difficult, and Extremely Difficult. While fans drew comparisons to Soulslike titles after its PlayStation Showcase 2023 debut—due to its moody aesthetic and intense combat—the addition of multiple difficulty options sets it apart. Soulslike games are known for their rigid challenge and lack of accessibility options, making this a clear divergence.
Game Director Soulframe addressed these comparisons in an official tweet following the Summer Game Fest 2024 reveal. He emphasized that “making another soulslike” was never the goal. Instead, the team aims for fast-paced, combo-driven combat that’s chaotic, deeply rewarding, and electrifying.
The game’s dark world and intricate boss encounters initially led to Soulslike parallels. Soulframe acknowledged influences in its layered environments, branching pathways, and hidden secrets—but clarified that “the similarities stop there.” He previously described the experience as “Ninja Gaiden combat on a Souls game map,” blending relentless hack-and-slash action with expansive exploration.
Gameplay Features With Over 30+ Weapons, 20-30 Hours of Playthrough, And More
Additional details emerged from recent interviews. Players can choose from 30 primary weapons and 20 secondary weapons, each with distinct combat styles and effects. The main story is estimated to last 20 to 30 hours, with an equal amount of content available through side missions.
Boss encounters will feature at least two phases. If you fall during the second phase, you’ll restart directly at that stage—no need to replay the first. A new mode called “Li Wulin” lets players rematch previously defeated bosses, unlocking hidden adversaries in the process.
A hidden mechanic tied to the game’s ending has been hinted at, though how it influences the narrative or how many endings exist remains unconfirmed.

The game’s official Twitter (X) account also shared a Lunar New Year video, where Soulframe teased more exciting announcements this year—and revealed that the team is preparing something fans have never seen before.
