Ryukishi07, the creator behind Higurashi When They Cry, has shared insights into his work on Silent Hill f, comparing the game’s blend of supernatural and psychological horror to "salad dressing."
With the anticipation for Silent Hill f firmly building momentum—marking a return to new mainline entries in the series since 2012—hearsay from writer Ryukishi07 has been scarce, making his recent appearance at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles last month especially notable.
During a panel featuring producer Motoi Okamoto and composer/sound designer Akira Yamaoka, Ryukishi07 noted that he approached this project differently than his usual writing style by centering the narrative around a single core theme.
According to Famitsu, as reported by Automaton, Ryukishi07 explained that players will initially struggle to distinguish between supernatural and psychological horror, as both elements may feel intertwined. However, as the story unfolds, clarity will emerge. He described this progression by saying the game "will be like a salad dressing."
Elaborating on the metaphor, he compared it to oil and vinegar in a dressing that separate over time despite being initially blended together—symbolizing how the horror elements become distinct yet connected.
If this comparison seems unusual, you are certainly not alone. Ryukishi07 added that while players will uncover facts and clues about Ebisugaoka as they progress, much will remain open to interpretation—a hallmark of Silent Hill experiences.
He also revealed that Silent Hill f is more than just horror; it explores deeply human themes such as love and sorrow, consistent with the series' legacy.
Silent Hill f does not serve as a direct sequel to previous titles but offers a standalone narrative "independent from the series," according to publisher Konami. The company confirmed on X/Twitter that this installment—typically set in an American East Coast resort town—is "a completely new title" that "people who have never played the Silent Hill series can enjoy."
Okamoto highlighted the intense combat, enhanced by visuals and music that juxtapose beauty with terror. He praised the "terrible beauty of the game’s monster design," noting even puzzles are rooted in psychological anguish.
Set in 1960s Japan, Silent Hill f follows Hinako Shimizu, a teenager navigating societal pressures from friends and family. As shown in the initial Japanese-language reveal trailer last March, it is the first Silent Hill game to receive an 18+ rating certification in Japan. The title releases on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on September 25.
