He attributes the development challenges faced by The Witcher 4 to this issue, labeling it as a "production hell."
Vavra points out that while Unreal Engine excels in creating environments like deserts and rocky terrains, it struggles with rendering more detailed elements such as trees. He specifically criticizes the engine's Nanite technology for its limitations in producing realistic vegetation. According to Vavra, CD Projekt, the studio behind The Witcher series, has been struggling to adapt scenes that previously worked seamlessly on their proprietary RED Engine to Unreal Engine.
The developer questions the decision of CD Projekt to switch from their well-regarded RED Engine to Unreal Engine, especially for open-world games where custom engines are typically preferred. Vavra also highlights the high hardware demands of Unreal Engine, noting that it requires computers that cost several thousand euros, which he believes are beyond the reach of most gamers.
