The director of Avowed has hinted at exciting plans for the franchise following the game's successful launch. Dive into the details about potential expansions, sequels, and other developments from the studio.
Avowed Director Wants To Do More With The World They Built
Possibility of Expansions or Sequels
Avowed has achieved impressive sales, pleasing both Microsoft and Obsidian. In a recent interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the potential for expanding the game's universe. Although no official announcements have been made, Patel expressed a keen interest in continuing the journey within this world. She stated, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."
Changes in Avowed During Development
The development journey of Avowed was filled with challenges and significant changes. Patel shared that the process was initially chaotic but ultimately led to a successful outcome. The project, which began in 2018, faced hurdles as Obsidian navigated the complexities of being an independent studio. Microsoft's acquisition in 2020 marked a turning point, though it required the team to abandon certain features, including multiplayer elements. A leadership change in January 2021 led to a reboot of the project.
Under Patel's leadership, managing a team of over 80 people was no small feat. She explained, "Normally if you’re stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction, putting together a new vertical slice and revised production plans, you would do that with a very small team." The focus shifted to enhancing the narrative and lore from the Pillars of Eternity series, transitioning from an open world to open zones, which allowed for more detailed and immersive spaces.
Reflecting on the process, Patel noted, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."
Obsidian Wants Pillars of Eternity Tactics
With Avowed bringing renewed attention to the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian is exploring new avenues, including a tactics game. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, director of Pillars of Eternity and its sequel, shared the studio's interest in developing Pillars: Tactics. Sawyer commented, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games." However, he highlighted the challenges in determining the project's scope, including team size, visual quality, and overall scale.
Despite this interest, Sawyer remains focused on creating Pillars of Eternity 3, envisioning a project with a budget comparable to Baldur’s Gate 3, around $100 million, a significant increase from the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
