Hideo Kojima Shares Unused Game Concepts on KOJI10 Radio Podcast

Hideo Kojima's Japanese radio show KOJI10 continues offering rare glimpses into the creative mind behind Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding. The latest broadcast (Episode 17) explored how real-world time progression could enhance gameplay experiences. Beyond discussing implemented time mechanics in his previous titles, Kojima unveiled several shelved concepts - including one planned for Death Stranding 2: On The Beach.

Time as a Gameplay Element

The visionary director has frequently experimented with console clock-based mechanics throughout his career. He cites two groundbreaking examples from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004) where food would spoil in real-time and an optional week-long wait could defeat the elderly sniper The End through natural causes.

One abandoned concept involved progressive beard growth for protagonist Sam Porter Bridges. "I considered having Norman Reedus' character require regular shaving, with his appearance deteriorating over time," Kojima explained. "But we ultimately decided against making our leading man look scruffy." The director admits he might revisit similar mechanics in future projects.

Three Philosophical Game Concepts

Kojima proposed three innovative game frameworks centered on real-time mechanics:

  1. The Life Simulator: Characters would physically age in real-time, with changing abilities affecting gameplay - youthful agility versus elderly wisdom.
  2. The Artisan's Path: A craft-based experience where items like wine or cheese mature through actual waiting periods.
  3. The Forgetting Game: Skills and knowledge degrade during player inactivity, creating urgency to complete objectives.

While acknowledging these unconventional ideas might challenge mainstream acceptance ("Nobody would buy it!"), Kojima's podcast co-hosts expressed enthusiasm for their creative potential.

As Death Stranding 2's June 26 release approaches, fans eagerly await which of Kojima's experimental concepts made the final cut. For deeper insights, explore our exclusive interview with Kojima and 30-hour gameplay impressions.
