Mojang Rules Out Minecraft AI Tools for Creativity

By AvaNov 16,2025

Minecraft's developer, Mojang, has ruled out using generative artificial intelligence in its game creation pipeline.

The growing influence of generative AI in game development is increasingly apparent, from Activision confirming its use of AI-generated art in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 to Microsoft creating Muse, an AI tool for conceptualizing game ideas.

However, judging by recent statements, Mojang has no intention of adopting its parent company's latest technology, favoring the human creativity that propelled Minecraft to become the best-selling game ever with over 300 million copies sold.

"For us, Minecraft is fundamentally about creativity and creation," explained Minecraft Vanilla game director Agnes Larsson during a recent IGN-attended event. "We believe it's crucial that the act of creation brings us human joy. That purpose makes life beautiful. Therefore, we're committed to having our own teams develop our games."

Ingela Garneij, executive producer for Minecraft Vanilla, elaborated on this perspective: "To me, it's about unconventional thinking. That distinct understanding of what Minecraft is—its visual identity, its essence—that unique quality is incredibly difficult to replicate with AI. We've even attempted working with remote teams, guiding them to build content for us, but it never succeeded. True collaboration requires face-to-face interaction.

"Creativity demands personal connection. You need to engage as humans to fully grasp the values, principles, lore, and the entire ecosystem. Minecraft is vast—it's a planet, it's enormous."

The human developers behind Minecraft continue building upon its record-breaking foundation. The recently unveiled Vibrant Visuals graphics overhaul is scheduled for release soon, and Mojang maintains its stance against making Minecraft free-to-play. This dedication to enhancing the original game aligns with their decision against developing a "Minecraft 2." Though 16 years old, Minecraft shows no signs of decline, and generative AI remains excluded from its Nether realms.
