MultiVersus Gameplay Updates Impress Players, Sparking #SaveMultiVersus Trend

By ChristianFeb 12,2025

MultiVersus' impending closure in May, after Season 5, hasn't dampened the enthusiasm of its player base. A recent update dramatically increased combat speed, a change long-requested by the community, leading to a surge in positive gameplay experiences and a social media campaign, #SaveMultiVersus.

The game's final season, launched February 4th, introduced Aquaman and Lola Bunny as its last playable characters. However, the significant gameplay overhaul overshadowed the bittersweet farewell. The speed increase, detailed in a Season 5 Combat Changes Preview video, is a fundamental shift from the previously criticized "floaty" gameplay. Patch notes attribute the change to a reduction in hitpause across most attacks, resulting in faster combos and movement. Several characters, including Morty, LeBron, and Bugs Bunny, received additional speed adjustments.

This revitalized gameplay has players celebrating a game finally fulfilling its potential, even as its demise approaches. The contrast between the improved gameplay and the imminent shutdown is striking. One Reddit user aptly described MultiVersus as "the most interesting bad game in existence," highlighting its troubled launch, relaunch, and now, its final, improved iteration. Professional player Mew2King questioned the timing of the speed increase, lamenting the missed opportunity for a successful relaunch had these changes been implemented earlier. Another Reddit user echoed this sentiment, comparing the situation to the success of Apex Legends, which prioritized core gameplay from the outset.

Despite the positive reception to the Season 5 update, which addressed numerous player concerns, Warner Bros. remains committed to shutting down MultiVersus on May 30th. Real-money transactions were disabled on January 31st, and the premium battle pass is now free. While the game director, Tony Huynh, offered closing remarks, the community's hopes for a reversal remain largely unaddressed.

The situation is a poignant one. Players are simultaneously mourning the game's end and celebrating its improved gameplay. Memes and expressions of disbelief highlight the bittersweet irony of a game reaching its peak just as it's being discontinued. The finality of the situation is undeniable, yet the community's passion and the game's improved state offer a complex and memorable conclusion.
