It's worth recalling that Helldivers 2 broke records as the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever, amassing an incredible 12 million copies sold within just 12 weeks—a milestone unlikely to be surpassed by any other first-party Sony title. Since its explosive launch, the game has weathered significant changes, including a controversial reversal on PSN account requirements for Steam players, intense review-bomb campaigns, and a community often at odds with the game itself due to contentious nerfs and buffs.
Despite these challenges, Arrowhead has been grappling with managing a much larger and more mainstream audience than it had previously encountered. Now, 14 months after Helldivers 2's debut on PC and PlayStation 5, the question arises: How does Arrowhead view its journey so far? Has the studio begun to master the demanding realm of live-service gaming? And following the exciting collaboration with Killzone, could a partnership with Warhammer 40,000 be on the horizon?
IGN had the opportunity to sit down with Alex Bolle, the production director of Helldivers 2, to delve deeper into these questions and more.
