Bioshock Creator Was Shocked by Irrational Games Closure

Irrational Games' Closure: A Retrospective by BioShock Infinite's Ken Levine

Ken Levine, creative director behind the acclaimed BioShock Infinite, recently reflected on the unexpected closure of Irrational Games following the game's success. He describes the decision by Take-Two Interactive as "complicated," revealing that the studio's shuttering came as a surprise to most of its employees, including himself. Despite his own desire to leave Irrational after the intense development of Infinite, Levine expected the studio to continue operating. "I thought they were going to continue. But it wasn’t my company," he stated in a recent interview with Edge Magazine (via PC Gamer).

Levine acknowledges personal struggles during Infinite's creation, impacting his leadership abilities. "I don’t think I was in any state to be a good leader," he admitted. He emphasizes his efforts to ensure a smooth transition for the team, aiming for "the least painful lay-off we could possibly do," which included comprehensive transition packages and ongoing support.

The legacy of Irrational Games, known for titles like System Shock 2 and BioShock Infinite, continues to resonate. Levine even suggests that a BioShock remake would have been a fitting project for the studio to undertake.

Looking ahead to the anticipated BioShock 4, developed by Cloud Chamber Studios, fans are hopeful that lessons learned from BioShock Infinite's release will be applied. While an official release date remains unannounced, speculation abounds, with many anticipating an open-world setting while retaining the series' signature first-person perspective. The game's development continues under 2K.
