Sony's copyright claims against Bloodborne fan projects are escalating. Following last week's takedown of the popular Bloodborne 60fps mod by Lance McDonald, Lilith Walther's acclaimed Bloodborne PSX demake has now been targeted. A YouTube video showcasing the demake received a copyright claim from MarkScan Enforcement, a company confirmed by McDonald to be working on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment. This is the same company responsible for the DMCA takedown of McDonald's 60fps mod.
McDonald speculates that Sony's aggressive actions might be a preemptive move to clear the way for an official 60fps remake or remaster. He suggests that removing fan projects from search results related to "Bloodborne 60fps" and "Bloodborne remake" would prevent confusion and potential trademark issues should Sony announce such a project.
The situation highlights the ongoing frustration surrounding Bloodborne's lack of official next-gen support. While fans have achieved impressive results with PS4 emulators, delivering a near-remaster experience at 60fps, Sony's response remains enigmatic. Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered a theory suggesting that Hidetaka Miyazaki's personal attachment to the game and desire for creative control might be preventing any official updates or remasters.
Despite Miyazaki's past comments indicating that FromSoftware doesn't own the IP and his acknowledgement of the game's suitability for modern hardware, Bloodborne remains largely untouched, nearly a decade after its initial release. The recent DMCA actions, however, fuel speculation about a potential official return to the beloved title. The lack of official comment from Sony leaves fans in a state of anticipation and uncertainty.
