Sony Unveils teamLFG: New PlayStation Studio from Bungie, Crafting Team-Based Action Game Blending Fighting, MOBA, and 'Frog-Type' Elements

Sony has announced the creation of a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, teasing their debut game in the process. In a recent post on the PlayStation Blog, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Studio Business Group, revealed that teamLFG was initially formed at Bungie, the developer behind Destiny and Marathon, and is now working on an ambitious incubation project that has Hulst very excited.

The name teamLFG, which stands for 'Looking For Group,' reflects the studio's focus on social gaming. Their first game is described as a team-based action game, drawing inspiration from a diverse range of genres including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." The game will immerse players in a lighthearted, comedic world set within a new, mythic, science-fantasy universe.

teamLFG emphasizes their mission to foster games where players can find friendship, community, and a sense of belonging. They aim to create an environment where players log on to find their teammates already engaged and interacting. The studio wants to encourage the creation of memorable moments and shared experiences, fostering a community where players can celebrate and reminisce about epic plays that define matches. As they put it, "dat’s da good stuff."

The studio is committed to developing immersive multiplayer worlds through action games that players can learn, play, and master over countless hours. They plan to involve the community directly in the development process through early access playtests, ensuring they can adapt and respond to player feedback both before and after the game's launch, maintaining a dynamic live service that evolves with its community over the years.

teamLFG's game is the result of an incubation project that originated at Bungie during a period marked by significant layoffs. Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie struggled to meet financial targets with Destiny 2, leading to layoffs in November 2023, affecting around 100 employees. A subsequent round of layoffs in 2024 impacted an additional 220 people, representing 17% of the studio's workforce, with 155 employees being reassigned within Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was during this time that the incubation project was spun off to form teamLFG.

Last year, a former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in implementing improvements to Destiny 2, describing the parent company's involvement as highly beneficial. Since then, Bungie has unveiled their extraction shooter Marathon and outlined the future roadmap for Destiny 2. They have reportedly abandoned plans for Destiny 3 and canceled a Destiny spinoff called Payback.
