Team Fortress 2 Modders Rejoice as Valve Releases Full Client and Server Game Code

Valve unleashes a colossal Source SDK update, granting full access to Team Fortress 2's client and server code. This unprecedented move empowers modders to craft entirely new games based on TF2's foundation. Unlike previous Steam Workshop limitations, this update allows for extensive modifications, expansions, and even complete rewrites of the game's core mechanics.

While commercialization is prohibited – all resulting mods and derivative content must remain free and non-commercial – creations can be published on the Steam Store, listed as independent games.

Valve's rationale, detailed in a recent blog post, acknowledges the significant community investment in TF2 inventories and Steam Workshop contributions. The company urges modders to respect this investment and refrain from creating mods designed to profit from the community's work. Ideally, Valve hopes that many mods will maintain compatibility with players' existing TF2 inventories.

This expansive update isn't limited to TF2. Valve is also rolling out a substantial update to its entire back-catalog of multiplayer Source engine titles, incorporating 64-bit binary support, scalable HUD/UI, prediction fixes, and numerous other enhancements. These improvements benefit TF2, DoD:S, HL2:DM, CS:S, and HLDM:S.

The news follows the December release of the seventh and final chapter of the Team Fortress 2 comic, a seven-year saga that has consistently captivated fans and showcased Valve's enduring commitment to this long-standing franchise.
