Sony's New Patent Aims to Minimize Gaming Latency with AI and Sensor Technology
A recently published Sony patent, WO2025010132, titled "TIMED INPUT/ACTION RELEASE," outlines a potential solution to reduce input latency in future gaming hardware. This is particularly relevant given the introduction of technologies like frame generation, which while boosting frame rates, can introduce noticeable lag. This follows similar efforts from AMD (Radeon Anti-Lag) and Nvidia (Nvidia Reflex).
Sony's PlayStation 5 Pro already features the PSSR upscaler, capable of upscaling lower resolutions to 4K. However, the patent addresses the inherent latency between user input and system processing, leading to delayed commands and impacting gameplay responsiveness.
The proposed solution involves a two-pronged approach:
- Predictive AI: A machine learning model anticipates the user's next input.
- External Sensor Input: A sensor, potentially a camera observing the controller, provides real-time data on the user's intended action. The patent specifically mentions using camera input as input to the machine learning model. Alternatively, the sensor could be integrated into the controller itself, possibly leveraging analog button technology.
While the patent's specifics may not directly translate to the PlayStation 6, it demonstrates Sony's commitment to minimizing latency without sacrificing responsiveness. This is especially crucial given the growing popularity of frame generation techniques like FSR 3 and DLSS 3, which often increase latency.
The benefits of this technology would be most noticeable in fast-paced games requiring both high frame rates and low latency, such as competitive shooters. However, the ultimate implementation of this patent in future hardware remains uncertain.
