World of Warcraft Takes a Jab at Final Fantasy 14 With Its Housing Plans

Player housing is making its way to World of Warcraft, and Blizzard has given fans an exciting preview of how this feature will be integrated into the beloved MMO. In a recent developer blog, the World of Warcraft team outlined the initial concepts and even managed to playfully reference Final Fantasy XIV's housing system.

World of Warcraft is introducing a much-anticipated housing feature with its upcoming expansion, World of Warcraft: Midnight. The developers emphasized their commitment to accessibility, declaring "A Home for Everyone" as a primary goal. "As part of our focus on wide adoption, we wanted to ensure that Housing is available to everyone. If you want a house, you can have a house," Blizzard stated. They assured players that there would be no steep requirements, high costs, lotteries, or burdensome maintenance. Importantly, even if a player's subscription lapses, their house won't be repossessed.

Player housing allows players to purchase and personalize their own in-game homes, fostering creativity and community. In Final Fantasy XIV, this feature has led to innovative uses such as theater productions, nightclubs, cafes, and museums. However, Final Fantasy XIV's housing system has faced criticism for its limited plots, high Gil costs, lottery system, and the risk of demolition if neglected.

Blizzard is taking a different approach, aiming to address these concerns head-on. World of Warcraft's housing will be shared among a player's Warband, allowing characters from different factions to use the same house. For example, while a Human character can't purchase a house in a Horde zone, a Troll character in the same Warband can, and the Human can then utilize it.

The housing zones in World of Warcraft will be divided into two areas, each featuring "Neighborhoods" with approximately 50 plots. These neighborhoods are instanced, offering both Public and Private options. Public neighborhoods are managed by the game servers and created dynamically, suggesting no hard cap on the number of neighborhoods.

Blizzard is committed to making World of Warcraft's housing a lasting feature, with plans for continuous updates and a dedicated roadmap stretching into future patches and expansions. While playfully acknowledging Final Fantasy XIV's challenges, Blizzard's approach shows a clear understanding of the potential pitfalls and a strong commitment to player satisfaction.

More details about World of Warcraft: Midnight and its housing system are expected to be revealed this summer.
