Developers of Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era Reveal Details About the Swarm Faction

Unfrozen Studio, the developers behind Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, have unveiled further details about the intriguing Swarm faction, following its initial teaser. They've revealed the inspiration behind this unique castle, explaining the evolution from the initially conceived "Inferno" faction to the final, chillingly effective "Swarm." The narrative unfolds within the rich tapestry of the Jadame continent.

The Swarm's defining characteristic is its remarkable adaptability. Certain creatures possess abilities directly influenced by the strength of their opponents; the greater the difference, the higher the damage inflicted. Others, like the mantises, offer tactical flexibility, choosing from three distinct abilities each round. A particularly gruesome yet effective strategy involves creatures like worms and locusts, capable of devouring corpses to heal and enhance their power – a skill even heroes can learn.

In Olden Era, the insectoid race, previously only briefly mentioned in Might & Magic 8, takes on the mantle of the demonic threat. While respecting existing lore, the developers have infused the Swarm with elements of body horror and occultism, transforming them from a mere insect colony into a terrifying cult devoted to a single, all-powerful ruler. Each member exists as part of a vast collective consciousness, their sole purpose the fulfillment of their master's will.

Gameplay revolves around the Swarm's "mono-faction" mechanic, rewarding players who field exclusively Swarm units, as these units synergistically enhance one another. A further strategic layer is added through the ability to summon cocoons, their health directly tied to the overall army size. The larvae hatching from these cocoons provide temporary units, allowing for dynamic battlefield adaptation.

The Swarm's playstyle is aggressively focused on direct confrontation. Creatures can consume corpses for healing and empowerment, and deploy unique abilities that shift based on enemy strength. This approach provides a dramatically different combat strategy, offering players a refreshing and challenging experience.
