PlayStation itself is actively involved in AI research and development, possessing a dedicated AI department established in 2022. This commitment extends beyond gaming, with Hulst expressing ambitions to expand PlayStation's intellectual property into film and television, citing the God of War adaptation as an example. Further, there are rumors of a potential acquisition of Kadokawa Corporation, a major player in Japanese multimedia, hinting at broader entertainment ambitions.

Reflecting on PlayStation's history, former chief Shawn Layden described the PlayStation 3 era as an "Icarus moment," a period of overly ambitious goals that ultimately led to a valuable lesson: focusing on core gaming experiences. The PS3's attempt to be a multimedia powerhouse proved too costly and complex, leading to a refocus on delivering the "best game machine of all time," a strategy that contributed to the success of the PlayStation 4.
